Commercial Design and Build

Every community needs a hub, and what better place to gather than the community cafe!

Utilising 2 different container buildings from post-quake Christchurch CBD, this unique cafe is an urban up-cycled masterpiece.

9 containers of various sizes were forged together to create an open-plan cafe, and self-contained site office. Wide windows and decks capture the ever-growing community as it develops, while enjoying great food, great company, and wonderful entertainment at the adjacent playground.

“When we were first approached about this project, we were excited and honoured to be involved. There were many discussions about how to bring the vision to life, but also about the technical aspects of using containers that had previously had a life. One set had been an ale house and the other set had been a men’s clothing store. Bringing the two together required moving individual pieces into place and then revising the openings as needed. In addition to the technical complexity, we were on a tight deadline to be finished and open ready for the grand opening of Paerata Rise and all the dignitaries who would be attending! Our team and subtrades worked tirelessly to make it a success. We are always proud to go there for our morning coffee!”
